{"id":1955,"date":"2013-06-06T00:03:40","date_gmt":"2013-06-06T00:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kainosprint.com.au\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2022-06-23T07:34:09","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T07:34:09","slug":"when-worlds-collide-a-call-to-overhaul-the-national-print-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kainosprint.com.au\/kpblog\/when-worlds-collide-a-call-to-overhaul-the-national-print-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"When worlds collide \u2014 a call to overhaul the National Print Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text2linespaced\">This year, at the four yearly PacPrint printing trade show (held in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre), it was obvious that digital printing is well on the way to taking a huge chunk of offset printing&#8217;s traditional market &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"\/kpblog\/pacprint13-the-week-that-changed-the-printing-industry-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see my blog on the subject.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The National Print Awards were held in conjunction with PacPrint on Friday 24th May at the Crown Palladium Ball Room in the Crown Casino complex at Southbank in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>The interesting thing is that in 2013, PacPrint was 90% digital, and 10% offset. The National Print Awards, on the other hand, are almost exactly the opposite, with the vast bulk of awards going to offset printed products. Clearly the National Print Awards are in need of a major overhaul to align them with the realities of the printing world.<\/p>\n<p>There is an amusing article in one of the daily print newsletters we subscribe to drawing attention to this misalignment. You can read the full article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.print21.com.au\/news\/when-worlds-collide-a-voice-in-the-wilderness-james-cryer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a small sample from the article.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Astronomers are hard people to whip into a frenzy. But occasionally \u2013 just occasionally \u2013 something happens to excite their passions and make them sit up and\u00a0take notice, or even duck for cover.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not often that you get two planets hurtling past each other \u2013 both going in completely opposite directions (although, I suppose\u00a0that\u2019s what \u201cgoing past each other\u201d means).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But last Friday night [24 May] we had a near-miss of the most cataclysmic proportions, as \u2018planet PacPrint\u2019 soared at warp speed into\u00a0the outer-limits of our imaginations, at once exciting and tantalising with glimpses of what \u2018the future of print\u2019 looks like.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meanwhile, we had \u2018planet NPA\u2019 [National Print Awards] drifting slowly along in the opposite direction, desperately trying to suck us back into the vortex of\u00a0yesteryear<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never was the disconnect more dramatically illustrated, than by the difference in composition of these two bodies \u2013 PacPrint proudly presenting the exciting\u00a0new face of print \u2013 90 per cent digital and 10 per cent offset \u2013 while the awards continue to flog those two processes almost in exactly the opposite proportions.\u00a0What\u2019s wrong with this picture?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why didn\u2019t someone frog-march whoever it is that persists with these categories down the aisles at PacPrint to give them a taste of the sunlit uplands where\u00a0digital is king because it generates so many new and exciting opportunities.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year, at the four yearly PacPrint printing trade show (held in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre), it was obvious that digital printing is well on the way to taking a huge chunk of offset printing&#8217;s traditional market &#8212;\u00a0see my blog on the subject.
